She loved to stand in the ocean, dreaming of being at sea on her own boat. The cats, however, spent their time in little boats beside her.

The Little Girl Who Could Fly

I’ve had this idea stuck in my head for a couple months now, but not wanting to do it in the freezing cold and snow, I’ve had to wait. Finally today it was warm and actually felt like spring! With the help of my Mom, son, and daughter, I got to do it.

Anna Bear

This year Anna insisted she wanted to be a bear. Her best friend is going to be a bunny so the obvious choice for Anna was a bear, right? I tried to talk her into being a fox, but relented when I realized it was her choice. I just so happened to have two different types of fur I’d bought back in Portland about 5 years ago. I can’t remember exactly what project I’d envisioned using such fur, but I had it and that was great for now! I’d been putting off making Anna’s bear costume because I’m not much of a seamstress. I can repair seams, sew buttons, I have a sewing machine, and know what a running stitch is, but this thick furry fabric was scaring me. Thankfully my mother simplified it. “Just double the fabric, lay Anna on top of it, and draw out a tunic, voila!” This was after we’d magically found a black bear hat at TJ Maxx yesterday. I felt more confident now that I didn’t have to sew a hood as well. /phew So, here’s Anna as the bear, a cute bear, not a scary bear, as she wanted.

Top 5!

It's MY Doll

My “reflection” photo of Anna made it into the Top 5 over at Fro Knows Photo! Always exciting to have a picture chosen for the Top 5. This weekend’s theme is “down”. I have lots of ideas but none I’m totally in love with yet. Thankfully you have until Tuesday to take photos for the theme! =)

The Reflection

I usually have a few pieces of paper in front of me where I randomly scribble out ideas for both paintings and photographs. One of my ideas was Anna in front of one of our old armoires, holding a doll, with the reflection being a ‘darker’ version of Anna reaching out for the doll. Due to lighting situations in the house, I changed it to a tall mirror in the forest. My mother kept asking when I was going to do that particular photo, and I kept putting it off. Well this weekend’s theme being “reflections”, my mom turned to threats if I didn’t take the shot… haha =) So we went out this morning and got it done. It’s not as dark as maybe I’d wanted to go initially, but I’m ok with that. The only problem is, I can’t decide if I like the black and white version, or the colored.

I took a little ‘behind the scenes’ of Anna in character. She’s always so willing to participate in photographs!

The Photographers

So every weekend I take pictures for Fro Knows Photo’s Weekend theme- that’s what a lot of my photos are for. This weekend’s theme is “Reflections” and aside from all the obvious types of shots with water, mirrors, shadows, et al, I started drawing out ideas and kept coming back to the thought that pictures are just reflections in a camera. It just so happens my Mother bought me an old Brownie Six 20 as an early birthday present and I wanted to photograph it.  (I want to take photos *with* it too =P) So I told the kids to pick a camera from my three and pose for me. Tiarnan is wearing an old Velvet suit I’ve hauled around for years, but never worn. I loved it because of the awkward length on him, since they’re actually cropped pants on me.

The photographers

Anna looks so serious in this picture, and it’s not because she was unhappy with posing, it was because a fly kept landing on her leg!
