A New Art Endeavor!

Hi Everyone! For the past 15 years I have been painting my Kilkenny Cat paintings, and every now and then I would paint something a little different, and most every time I did I would get concerned comments that I was changing my art. The latest one really made me start thinking about what that implied, and honestly I didn’t like it. I shouldn’t be tied to someone else’s expectations of what my art should be. My art is my own, and it’s whatever I want it to be, what ever I want to paint, you know? Not everyone is going to like it, and I don’t expect them to-where it’s my usual kitties, or my 3 a.m. Monster kitties, or funky kitties…or Picklelips.

So with that said, I decided to create a second art profile where I paint whatever silly idea pops into my head, not specifically “what are the kitties doing today,” but just any random thought. With that, I want to introduce Picklelips! My new outlet for fun and funky paintings. Sometimes I’ll even paint the same subject, like a KilkennyCat vs Picklelips kind of thing…which I’ve already done twice! Merry Christmas!

I wanted to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas! I hope your Christmas trees fared better than ours-nothing too drastic, the tree is still standing. But we’re missing quite a lot of ornaments and some limbs need the metal bent back upwards again. =P Enjoy the day!

More Autumness

Resting under the tree
A friend recently said to me that if I wanted more reds and yellows during autumn, the Eastern part of the state is where I wanted to be. Well, who knew?! I guess it’s just another slight downfall to buying a house online and moving across country. Everything seems so…brownish here, unless you’re looking at trees in people’s yards, there you’ll see the reds and yellows!

The Rockland Tunnel

The tunnel
We decided to take Fionnoula on a walk through the Rockland Tunnel today and take some pictures. I wanted to go early in the morning, since every morning I’ve left for work at the deli it’s been super foggy out. Of course it wasn’t today… Next time? Anyhow, I love this old tunnel! Built in 1915 as a railway tunnel, the craftsmanship that went into creating this half mile tunnel is superb. Unfortunately, like with everything, it’s been tagged to hell on the inside, with said taggers leaving their trash along the walls. It’s not even interesting or artful graffiti, it’s just crap like, “insert name sucks insert body part”, or backwards swastikas, badly drawn marijuana leaves, etc. There was one that made me stop in my tracks as I was using a flash. I didn’t include it in the photos below, but I’ll eventually share it. It was an outline of a woman’s body in a little alcove. The flash made it seem as though someone was standing there in the shadows. Kind of creepy! But today I’m just sharing pictures of Anna and Fionnoula “exploring” the tunnel. =)

They Emerged From the Snow

A portrait of Anna (ok so she got a white wig but it’s still here =P) and *her* new dog. A fun way for her to always remember the newest member of our family. Thankfully all the snow that fell yesterday provided a nice white backdrop on the hill that is our front yard.

She was as white as snow

As with all my little shoots, I require a face shot. =)

Ahh Spring!

Next to autumn, spring is my favorite time of year. I look so forward to the buds on trees, flowers, birds singing… I’m not really sure when “spring” is going to come this year. I’ve never been one to poo-poo snow or winter-I absolutely love it. ย I’m just a little tired of it now even though everything looks so beautiful. We took a little walk this morning to take in the snow falling.

We Got a Dog

Fionnoula

My Mother has this thing, this memory of always having a dog in the house. Walking on the Oregon coast with a dog, collecting rocks, shells, glass… She loves having a dog. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a huge cat person, but there’s always a want, no a need for a dog. Anyway, she finally found the right one! While researching the “perfect dog” for a family with kids and cats, she kept coming across Great Pyrenees dogs, so she set off searching for one. She found a guy in Ohio who had some puppies, which I immediately recoiled at the thought. I have two kids, I don’t want a third! As luck would have it (for us and the dog) this guy was done breeding his Great Pyrenees and was keeping two of the puppies but didn’t want the mother anymore. How sad right?? The only logical thing was we’d take the mother! Aside from the fact that she’s 4, already house-trained, and just beautiful, we’d be putting an end to any more breeding. Stopping the ‘puppy-factory’ if you will. We jumped in the car and drove 3 hours into the emptiness of SE Ohio and got our girl! We got her on Saint Patrick’s day, so instead of a proper French name, she ended up with an Irish name: Fionnoula Maeve O’Quinn (mom’s family name.) It was leaps and bounds better than her previous name, which I won’t bother to even type.

Taking Fionnoula for a walk

Fionnoula is the sweetest dog I’ve ever met and though I was reluctant to have a dog in the house, the cats don’t even seem to mind her. But what’s more amazing, is that she doesn’t mind the cats, or the chickens. She’s barely interested in either. She’d rather follow my daughter up and down two flights of steps, outside, wherever she goes Fionnoula is close by.
